Hoosiers across the state rely on small businesses to provide jobs, goods and services. Many small-business owners are our neighbors and friends, and their success is critical to the economic health of our communities and state. Even as dining, leisure, tourism and travel industries continue to return to pre-pandemic levels of business and customer interaction, many are still struggling.

This session, I’m joining my colleagues by supporting legislation to spur Indiana’s economic recovery by establishing the Hoosier Hospitality Small Business Restart Grant Program.

Last summer, the Small Business Restart Program dedicated $30 million from the CARES Act to help Hoosier businesses with rent and mortgage, utilities and lease payments. House Bill 1004 would build on the success of this proven grant program and establish the Hoosier Hospitality Small Business Restart Fund. The new program would provide $30 million in grants to struggling businesses experiencing significant losses due to the pandemic, especially in the tourism and hospitality industries.

Qualifying small businesses could receive a grant to put toward business and payroll expenses. In addition to state dollars, this program could also receive funding from federal grants, donations and other sources. Indiana depends on small businesses to keep its economy thriving, and these grants would help businesses continue to bounce back and stay open.

House Bill 1004 recently passed out of the House of Representatives and is on its way to the Senate.

One of the best ways to support small businesses across the state is by shopping locally. To find small businesses in your area, visit IndianaGrown.org, which is an online resource for consumers to connect directly with fellow Hoosiers selling or producing Indiana-made products.
