A group of Milltown residents and business owners has begun meeting to brainstorm ideas they can put into action to promote tourism in the town.
Resident and musician Bill Byrd believes there is great opportunity that can be capitalized upon. He approached some other people who agreed, and a group has met twice and plans to continue.
Cave Country Canoes, located on the banks of the Blue River, draws an estimated 40,000 visitors to the town during a six-month period.
The group has discussed ideas for ways to interest those visitors in other local events and happenings.
A summer music series was one idea that gained support and is being pursued.
A downtown farmers market is another possibility. The market could feature local produce and other homemade items for sale.
Establishing an artists’ colony to showcase a variety of different types of arts was also discussed.
The possibility of attracting a bank branch to Milltown was raised. A bank would increase traffic flow through the town.
Byrd said the group has also discussed improving the appearance of the town.
The group hopes to encourage homeowners to take pride in their properties and work with the town council to beautify Milltown.
Anyone interested in the future of Milltown is encouraged to get involved. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 7, at 7 p.m. at Cave Country Canoes. Everyone is welcome.
