CC’s Kopp third at PLAC X-C meet

Crawford County junior Melonie Kopp had a goal of reaching all-conference status in Saturday’s Patoka Lake Athletic Conference meet on the Mike Esarey Cross Country Course at Crawford County High School. Not only did she reach that goal, but she ran to a third-place finish, surprising herself.
“I did not expect to finish third,” Kopp said after her run.
Kopp didn’t get the best of starts, being pushed back to 15th through the first 200 meters with Perry Central’s Savannah Schaad taking the point. By the halfway point, Schaad was still in front with teammate Vanesa Barger in second and Kopp racing her way into the third spot.
At the finish, Schaad had pulled well ahead of Barger to win in a time of 21 minutes, 51 seconds. Barger finished in 22:01, and Kopp was third in 22:09. Paoli’s Hannah Albertson was fourth in 23:07, and Orleans’ runner Allison Hughett rounded out the top five in 23:13.
“I just wanted to make sure I made All-Conference this year,” said Kopp. “I was feeling good, so I pushed myself. It was one of my fastest times on this course, and it’s not an easy course. It felt good today.”
Kopp said she hopes to run well enough at Saturday’s Crawford County sectional to reach the next level at the regional.
“I’ll just push myself more at sectional,” said the junior. “I know I can get a faster time and just keep improving.”
Schaad said she wasn’t completely satisfied with her finish but felt good about getting the win.
“It was decently good,” she said. “I didn’t get my PR, but I got higher than I was supposed to get. The hills definitely helped. We knew that we wanted to stick together and we wanted to fight for what we wanted. We were pretty confident.”
Perry Central won as a team with a score of 30 with the Lady Pack finishing second with a score of 71 points. Mitchell was two points behind Crawford County with 73 points for third.
Crawford County coach Mark Boone said he put his hair on the line to motivate his girls before their run.
“I told them them if they placed at least second, they could cut my hair,” Boone said. “I don’t know how they’ll do it. They may cut it all off or put a bunch of lines in it. They have worked so hard this year. It’s good to see them do so well at the end of the season. They’ve deserved it.”
In the boys’ race, Orleans’ runner Bryce Jones dominated, finishing well ahead of the field in a time 17 minutes, 11 seconds. Teammate Xavier Alston was second in 17:30, and Springs Valley’s Grant Brown was third in 17:38. Perry Central’s Seth Guillaume was fourth in 17:47, and Spring Valley’s Alan Marshall was fifth in 18:06.
In the junior high division, Orleans won the boys’ team standings with Troy Dille winning for the Bulldogs in 11 minutes flat. In the girls’ race, Perry Central’s Summer Guillaume won in 12:00 with the Lady Commodores winning as a team.
