Two days removed from breezing through rivals New Albany and Jeffersonville at home for their 26th regional title, its third in the last four years, the Floyd Central boys’ tennis team traveled to Jasper to confront Columbus North in the Indiana High School Athletic Association semi-state.
While the No. 20 Highlanders had a strong performance at No. 1 doubles, it was the lone bright spot as the No. 2 Bulldogs breezed by the Highlanders 4-1 on Saturday.
The Highlanders’ top doubles tandem of seniors Landon Hodges and Colin Jacobi battled the Bulldogs’ Matthew Liu and Amrit Kar in a second-set tiebreaker before ultimately winning the match 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). With the victory, Hodges and Jacobi advance to the individual state finals Oct. 22 and 23 at Park Tudor High School in Indianapolis.
No other Highlander had anywhere near the success of Hodges and Jacobi’s against the Bulldogs.
Senior Isaac Anderton stood no chance against the Bulldog’s Nathan Lin at the top singles’ flight, falling 6-1, 6-0. Hank Lin followed against sophomore Ben Lammert with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles while Anvay Atram knocked out freshman Riley Doddridge in straight 6-3 sets. The duo of senior Jeremy Mueller and junior Braden Poe fell to Eric Stavnheim and Parth Shah 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
