The annual Light Up Leavenworth will take place Saturday, Dec. 4. This is the third year for the event, which is intended to usher in the holiday season.

The afternoon will kick off with the Holiday Parade of Lights at 2:30 p.m. Residents and businesses are encouraged to show their holiday spirit with festive parade entries.

Last year was the inaugural parade, which featured 22 floats. Organizers are hoping for more this year.

There will be a variety of activities taking place from 3 to 6 p.m. throughout the town, including at the Breeden Memorial Library, Leavenworth Volunteer Fire Department and Stephenson’s General Store.

Children can share their holiday gift wishes with Santa and complete free craft activities at the library. Entries from the teen art contest will be on display as well. Outside there will be children’s games, face painting, a bounce house and cake walk. Those attending can get some holiday shopping completed at the Light and Love Gift Show, featuring local artisans and vendors.

New this year will be hay rides and pony and horse rides. There will be a petting zoo as well.

Silent auction items will go to the highest bidder.

A chili cook-off and pie-baking contest will highlight the skills of local cooks. Stop by the library or Stephenson’s for an entry form; entries must be checked in at 2 p.m. Dec. 4. Entries will be for sale following judging at the fire department and Stephenson’s. The general store will also offer free hot chocolate.

Breeden Memorial Library will host an open house with free drinks and desserts from 5 to 7 p.m.

Librarian Tina Brison will read the holiday classic “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas” in the library courtyard at 6:25 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m., the winner of the youth poetry contest will throw the switch and “light up” Leavenworth.

For more information, visit the Breeden Memorial Library Facebook page or stop by the library Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday.
