For those who live in Marengo, it’s time to get out the tinsel and the lights. Decorating for Christmas this year could do more than spread holiday cheer; it might result in a cash prize.
At its Nov. 15 meeting, the Marengo Town Council discussed plans for a town-wide holiday decorating contest. Councilman Eddie Wetzel said he hopes this is the next step in the council’s ongoing effort to improve the town’s appearance.
It will also revive an old tradition.
“When I was a kid growing up, the garden club used to put on a decorating contest,” recalled Wetzel. “It’s the town’s way of trying to get people involved a little more and maybe bring some people in to see what it looks like.”
Wetzel said he’s approached local businesses, seeking sponsorships for prizes, and found them supportive. Cash prizes will be awarded as follows:
Best lawn and lighting, $300.
Best Christmas tree/window scene, $100.
Best mailbox, $50.
Best door, $50.
Best religious display, $100.
The contest is open to all residents who live within the town limits.
Residents are encouraged to get decorations up early. Judges, who have no ties to the town, will visit the town during the first part of the month to view the decorations. They will make their final decisions Dec. 18.
The council also decided to have its annual Christmas event for local children on Dec. 18.
Each child will get to visit with Santa and receive a toy.
The location of the children’s Christmas event has yet to be determined.
